THE race organisers of this year’s Wilmslow Triathlon have teamed up with The Christie charity to help raise money for a new cancer centre in Macclesfield.

Every participant who signs up for the event, which takes place on Sunday, April 19, will be offered a fundraising pack to support the appeal for The Christie at Macclesfield.

The triathlon, based at Wilmslow Leisure Centre, is the biggest sprint triathlon in Greater Manchester and Cheshire, attracting around 400 participants each year.

It is very suitable for novices with controlled lanes and seeded starts. The triathlon involves a 400-metre indoor pool swim, a picturesque 24.2-km cycle route in the Cheshire countryside, ending with a 6.3-km run along the quiet, leafy roads to the east of Wilmslow.

It is a mostly flat route with some inclines near the River Bollin.

With individuals or teams able to enter, and the choice of Sprint, Double Sprint, Aquabike, Aquathon, relay and triathlon, there are options for everyone.

Sporting events co-ordinator at The Christie charity, Imogen Healing, said: “We are thrilled to be teaming up with the organisers of this year’s Wilmslow Triathlon. It’s a great event and very accessible to first-timers or more experienced athletes.

“The money raised by our supporters in this event will go towards The Christie at Macclesfield. This ambitious new centre will transform cancer care for patients in East Cheshire and bring cancer care closer to home for 1,500 existing patients every year, along with a wider range of clinical trials than at the present time.”

Adrian Fuller from the Wilmslow Triathlon organisers said: “We are very excited to team up with The Christie charity to support such a vital project that will make a huge difference to thousands of people.

“Almost everyone knows someone who has been touched by cancer and anything we can do to help those who are battling the disease and make their lives easier is very welcome.”

All finishers will receive a medal and free event photos available for downloading and printing.

The Christie charity supports the work of The Christie NHS Foundation Trust providing enhanced services over and above what the NHS funds.

This includes money for care and treatment, research, education and extra patient services. Gifts from the public make a huge difference to the care and treatment that The Christie is able to provide to patients and their families.
