WILMSLOW’S first repair café at the United Reformed Church at the weekend has been hailed a great success.

Transition Wilmslow ran a busy repair café on Saturday morning.

With some 22 repairers happy to help, items as varied as chairs, coffee grinders, power hoses, children’s electronic devices and a bike got repaired.

The next repair cafe will be at St Chad’s in Handforth on March 28.

The repair cafe is part of Transition Wilmslow’s efforts to make the area more resilient and take action on climate change.

A group spokesman said: “We are all worried about waste and our ‘throwaway’ society, but we have lost many of the mending skills our parents and grandparents had.

“As a result we often feel we have no alternative but to throw broken items away and buy new.

Knutsford Guardian:

“Repair Cafes are an international movement that started in Holland in 2009, and there are Repair Cafes all over the UK.

“Our Repair Cafe has skilled volunteers who can assess and where possible fix broken items.

“Bring along your items needing repair and work with the volunteers to learn new skills and see how it is done.

“We will have tea, coffee, juice and homemade cakes and biscuits available for a donation, and people can work alongside our volunteers to gain new skills.

“We can’t guarantee that we can mend everything, but our volunteers will have plenty of useful advice.”
