A CON artist has tried to steal money donated to Knutsford Lions to help fund a Christmas Day Lunch for those who would otherwise be alone.

A would-be thief called at the home of a resident, posing as a member of Knutsford Lions Club, to collect an envelope for the charity's Christmas appeal.

However, the club stresses they do not pick up any donations in person.

The incident came to light a few days ago and has been reported to Cheshire Police and the charity now wants to warn people not to hand over envelopes containing money to anyone who knocks on their front door.

Knutsford Lions Club president Peter Willgoose said: "The envelope clearly states in red big bold letters that Lions will not be calling to collect envelopes.

"It says if you are happy to donate, it would assist greatly if you could seal this envelope and give it to a Lion club member or deliver it to Knutsford Heritage Centre."

The Lions seek donations to help fund their charity work in the community.

Members will be serving a turkey lunch with all the trimmings on Christmas day to mainly elderly residents who live on their own.

Senior citizens are also being invited to a variety show at Knutsford Methodist Church in February where they will receive free refreshments and live entertainment.

Throughout the year, the Lions support various community projects and good causes.

The organisation was founded more than 100 years ago and has 44,000 clubs all over the world.

"We are concerned that this attempted theft could tarnish our reputation," said Mr Willgoose. "Someone out there is impersonating the Lions Club and taking our money.

"We want to make people aware that nobody from the Lions will call to collect envelopes. If someone visits you impersonating us, please contact us or the police."
