A CHARITY has been flooded with donations after the heartbreaking wish of an eight-year-old girl went viral.

We told last month how the unknown Glasgow youngster asked Santa for a “warm jacket” on her wish list, which was left at the Forge Shopping Centre’s Giving Tree.

The tree encourages shoppers to dig deep to provide festive cheer to those who may be less fortunate in the area – without knowing the recipient.

But it was one girl’s wish in particular that struck a nerve with our readers – who have now rallied together to flood the charity with gifts and donations.

That generosity meant that the Forge had to stop the giving tree after fulfilling the gift requirement two weeks early - with more than 300 trolleys' worth being donated.

Jade Wilkie, marketing manager at the Forge, said: “It’s sad that we need to have something like this, nothing is more heartbreaking than seeing some of the things on the lists, but the public have been pulling together.

"Everyone wants to do their little bit – but that all adds up to make a massive difference.

"We want to give back, but we’re also just providing a hub in the centre for other generous people to give back too."

The Giving Tree is now in its sixth year, after being set up with the Forge in partnership with east end children's charity 'With Kids'.

Jade added: "We have over 300 trolleys full of gifts for kids – it’s so sad its needed but we’re left just speechless at how much it will help.

"Everyone who donated has made Christmas special for some people who really need it, and it’s allowed us to give more than just what was on the tag.

"Instead of waking up to one present they wished for, they will have many gifts, which is just phenomenal to think about.

"We need to say a big thank you to Glasgow.

"There’s not just people who saw it for the viral posts, but also we have regular shoppers who were waiting because they knew we run it every year."

People who still want to help out are being urged to donate to the With Kids online fundraising page, which provides help and support to children in Glasgow's east end all year round.
