A RECORD total of 1,850 runners tackled mud and unexpected water features in the 11th Tatton Yule Yomp 10K at Tatton Park.

Since the first race in 2009, when 250 runners turned out, the event has raised more than £175,000 for local charities David Lewis, Carers Trust 4 All, East Cheshire Hospice and North West Air Ambulance.

Starting at the Knutsford Gate to Tatton Park, the course winds its way round the park, through areas of mud and occasional unexpected water features, finishing outside Egerton Youth Club, where the runners get their medals and much-needed refreshment.

At the front of the pack the race is keenly contested by top club runners aiming for personal bests and podium places.

This year the men’s event was won by Arran McCloskey in 37.27, and the women’s by 16-year-old Nadine Tomkinson in 43.44.

Many of the runners dressed as Santas, reindeer and elves to get into the festive spirit for a memorable pre-Christmas run.

The event is organised by Cheshire Hash House Harriers.

“Each year it gets bigger and bigger,” says club and race secretary Nicky Owen.

Knutsford Guardian:

“We’re delighted it’s become such a popular date in people’s calendar, and grateful for all the help we get to put the race on, especially to our main sponsor, Roberts Bakery, which has been with us all the way.

“We’re also very appreciative of the many volunteers who turn up to help in the hall and marshal the course, year on year. It’s a massive team effort.”

In the past two years the event has also included a 3K fun run at Egerton YC for children aged six to 16.

Organised by Knutsford Tri Club Junior Section, more than 100 children took part, with Will Nettle and Ceyhan Diken winning the boys’ age categories, Sophie Ellwood and Bee Metcalfe taking the girls’ events.
