THE Chester Diocesan Guild of Church Bell Ringers held its annual meeting and annual ringing competition at St Luke’s Church in Holmes Chapel.

Eight teams of ringers from across Cheshire took part, including one from St Luke’s, who finished in second place.

Teams are judged on how accurately they ring for a test period of about five minutes.

The top three teams were Grappenhall with 89.6 per cent accuracy, Holmes Chapel with 86.3 per cent and Chester Cathedral with 82.1 per cent.

The team of Holmes Chapel ringers were John Murfin, David Phillips, Tracy Bud, Bill Hall, Mervyn Harrison and George Robey.

Mervyn Harrison, Tower Captain, said: “A jolly nice tea was enjoyed by all afterwards in the church hall. New ringers are always welcome.

“Please come along to one of our Friday evening practices if you would like to know more about this ancient art. Without new ringers our bells will eventually fall silent.”
