RESIDENTS are being invited to support Project Wenceslas, Knutsford Lion’s Winter Fuel Campaign.

For several years Knutsford and District Lions Club has been operating Project Wenceslas with the aim of reducing, and in time eliminating, fuel debt in Knutsford and surrounding areas.

The project links the Lions with the Citizen’s Advice Bureau and Great Places Housing, and since its launch a great deal of help has been provided to local families struggling to have hot meals and keep warm during the winter months.

Club president Peter Willgoose said: “Senior citizens are entitled to a Winter Fuel allowance irrespective of their needs, with payments being made to them usually in November or December.

“Those who feel they do not need all their allowance might like to consider making a donation to Knutsford Lions - Project Wenceslas so that help can then be given to families and individuals of all ages trapped in fuel poverty.

“Since the scheme was set up it has become apparent some families are missing out because they have prioritised fuel costs to the detriment of other needs or because of the complexities of the Universal Credit System.

“With this in mind the Lions made changes as from August 1, 2019 so that those suffering substantial financial hardship can also benefit.

“Donations are also encouraged by anyone else wishing to help with the scheme. All such donations are ring-fenced for 'Project Wenceslas'.

“Needy families are identified by the CAB or Great Places Housing (but not made known to Knutsford Lions), who then ask for funding from the scheme so they can pay monies direct to the fuel utility accounts of the affected households, or provide funds, under their strict control, to lessen financial hardship.

“The system ensures all the monies distributed are used for the purpose for which they are intended.”

Donations can be made through the Lions ‘Just Giving Account' via the Lions website, knutsfordlions.org.uk.
