A WOMAN has been falsely presenting herself as a deaf or mute charity collector.

The woman has been approaching people in Trafford and asking for cash donations towards a deaf centre which she claims is being set up in Timperley Library.

However, police have warned residents that this is a scam and have urged members of the public to be vigilant.

Officers shared an alert from Trafford Council's iCAN service — a network which informs the community of the latest cons and scams.

Greater Manchester Police's Altrincham team tweeted the warning: "Trafford iCAN — Fake 'deaf/mute' charity collector.

"Please be aware that a woman claiming to be deaf has been approaching people for cash donations to support a deaf centre, she claims is being set up in Timperley Library.

"This is not true and she may try this con anywhere in Trafford.

"Bogus callers may be men, women or even children.

"Please share this information with friends, relatives and neighbours and look after the more vulnerable among us."

To report suspicious callers, contact police on 101. In an emergency, call 999.
