RESIDENTS living near a fire testing facility in Howley are concerned that filters installed to reduce emissions are still releasing toxic fumes.

Warringtonfire, which has a site on Holmesfield Road, is situated close to the Riverside Point estate, on Farrell Street.

It is not the first time residents have called for action after being disturbed by smells and fumes coming from the firm's building.

In 2016, Warrington Borough Council and Exova, the previous owner of Warringtonfire, held discussions after serious concerns from nearby residents, who are now worried that the situation is not improving.

One resident explained: "They are setting fire to things and that is going to release toxic fumes.

"They said they were going to investigate but the filters are not working- it's been going on for years.

"We've put up with the smell for years but something has to be done."

Warringtonfire has been located in Holmesfield Road since 1975 and tests materials and products to make sure they comply with safety requirements.

Leigh Hill, divisional director, fire and building products testing at Element, said: "Warringtonfire has been conducting life-saving fire safety testing from our Holmesfield Road site for more than 40 years.

"We treat environmental compliance as a top priority and take any complaints made about operations at our site very seriously.

"Since the time that Warrington Borough Council (WBC) granted planning permission for the residential development adjacent to our site and the council first received complaints from the residents, Warringtonfire has worked closely with WBC to minimise disruption to our neighbours and keep everyone updated on our mitigation activities.

"Warringtonfire has already invested a significant amount of time and money, more than £1.5m to minimise impact on neighbouring properties.

"Our abatement system has been in place since April and continues to work effectively to clean smoke and reduce the emissions that leave our chimneys to ensure that we are well within the permitted industry levels.

"We remain committed to investing in further site improvements to minimise any disturbance to our neighbours, while maintaining a full schedule of testing.

"Our regular dialogue with Warrington Borough Council and residents remains key to us working together to deliver a positive outcome for everyone."
