A MAN who was evacuated from a boat at Hayhurst Quay early on Sunday morning says he still has no idea when he will be able to return home.

Steven Gould was among those evacuated from the marina as river levels rose over the weekend.

He was taken to Rudheath Leisure Centre and then to the Premier Inn at the Cookhouse and Pub – formerly the Woodpecker – before moving on to Memorial Court this morning.

Steven said: “We were evacuated about 3.30am [on Sunday]. They took us all away – I wanted to stay but the police asked everyone to leave.

“It was a bit of a scary experience, but they have done an amazing job.

“They put us in the care home opposite Waitrose and give us all tea and refreshments, and then took us to Rudheath Leisure Centre in the morning.

“They were amazing – they gave us refreshments, pyjamas, toiletries, food, sleeping bags – the lot.

“This morning we all thought we were getting back to our boats, but we have been taken to Memorial Court.

“Everyone got looked after and they are still doing so, but we left in a rush and some people only have the clothes on their backs.

“At the moment we are still none the wiser.”

Waitrose car park, which backs onto the marina, suffered the worst of the flooding with barriers also put up at the Dane Road/Watling Street junction to keep the water from the Bull Ring.
