A GRANDDAD who underwent a triple heart bypass less than a year ago has scaled Mount Snowdon to raise money for the hospital which saved his life.

Ronnie Caulfield, from Newton-le-Willows, climbed Mount Snowdon with his family, including his 10-year-old grandson Aedan, raising hundreds of pounds for Broad Green Hospital earlier this month.

The 69-year-old did no training for the five-hour long trek but was determined after undergoing his 12-hour operation on October 12 2018 to take on the challenge.

He was also joined by his son, Andy Caulfield who owns Unity Muay Thai in Newton-le-Willows and daughter- in-law Lynne.

His proud son Andy, 40, said: "Dad went to the doctors and they said he had to go to get surgery straight away and just like that my dad went in for bypass surgery.

"An hour after his operation he was walking around and set himself the challenge for climbing up Snowdon for the hospital within the year.

"To be scared of losing your dad through heart surgery and then less than a year later joining him to climb Snowdon was amazing.

"My son Aedan did it with him and he's very proud."

Since the challenge, Ronnie has raised £320 from family, friends and acquaintances. Members of Unity Thai Gym in Earlestown have also donated hundreds between them.
