WARRINGTON Wolves Women will be playing in Super League next year.

Lee Westwood’s side overhauled Barrow 40-4 at Manchester Regional Arena on Saturday afternoon to win the Championship Final and secure promotion in the process at the first time of asking.

Considering the Warrington side was only assembled from the point of staging trials 10 months ago, it is an incredible achievement.

Wolves, also the league leaders’ shield winners, lost only one league game all campaign, and that was their first competitive outing together in the season opener at Barrow.

But the Cumbrians saw in Manchester how fast this primrose and blue outfit have progressed and built up a healthy fanbase in the process, Wire legend Des Drummond being among the throng of spectators cheering the team home in the final.

Now everybody can look forward to matches next season against the likes of St Helens, Wigan, Leeds and Castleford as Wolves set out on a whole new journey at elite level.

They will need to step up their performance levels to make a mark on Super League but they certainly have players in their midst who can cause threat to the best of defences.

The likes of full-back Sammy Simpson, scrum-half and skipper Roxy Murdoch, loose-forward Danielle Bound and back-rower Rebekkah Wilson are a handful.

They also have a points machine in Michelle Davis, who landed six goals to go with a try in Manchester.

But success in 2020 will be built on teamwork – Westwood and his team of coaches will demand it - as has been the case all year and was evident in spades against Barrow.

Warrington were too well-organised, too committed in defence, too powerful and too fast in the final.

They took control early and never relinquished their advantage, though they probably would have liked to have been further ahead at the break than 18-4 as Barrow were still just about in the contest.

Wire hooker Michelle Garvey ghosted over from dummy half after 10 minutes for the opening score.

When Wilson looked up at first receiver and saw a static defence in front of her she powered over for the second try five minutes later.

And with Michelle Davis landing both conversions it was already becoming a mountain for the Cumbrians to climb, one that got a little steeper when Bound kicked ahead a loose ball and regathered to storm home from 30 metres for another converted try that made it 18-0 in 21 minutes.

The second quarter was more even and Warrington’s defence needed to be strong to keep Barrow at bay.

But after one rampaging burst by substitute forward Hannah Sherloch there was space on the edge for Michelle Larkin to exploit and pull a try back for Barrow after 26 minutes.

Wolves needed the first try of the second period to seal the contest and it was forthcoming through Aimie Toher, who swatted off defenders like flies in a bulldozing gallop over 20 metres. Davis’ extras made it 24-4.

For the next try, the ball went from one side to the other after Charlotte Hill was held up short, allowing Davis to pounce with a smart finish after 59 minutes.

Bound and Murdoch combined to put Rowanne Smalley over on the other flank soon after and Davis belted over the conversion from the touchline.

Bound, who had crossed twice in the semi-final win against Huddersfield a week earlier, completed another double with a wonderful 40-metre solo special in the 73rd minute, with Davis again converting.

Not only did it seal for her the player-of-the-match trophy, but it was a fine way to cap a stunning season.

Bring on Super League.
