A 72-year-old man died in hospital yesterday (Thursday) after collapsing while out cycling with friends in Goostrey.

The man collapsed in Blackden Lane near its junction with Church Bank, and the emergency services attended the scene.

The man, who came from Manchester, was taken by ambulance to Macclesfield Hospital, where he died.

A Cheshire Police spokesman said at 12.39pm police received a report of a man collapsed in Blackden Lane. The man had been cycling at the time.

His next of kin have been informed, and a file will be prepared for the coroner.

The North West Air Ambulance attended the scene, landing in a field, along with an ambulance and rapid response vehicles.

It is believed the man was among a group of retired cyclists when he collapsed, and the group was on its return journey to Manchester after having lunch at a golf course.

The air ambulance landed in a field near a former vicarage, and police closed Church Bank and Blackden Lane until the emergency was over.

Another cyclist, who was not with the group, said: "It seems they were just riding along the lane when he suddenly collapsed and came off his bike.

β€œHe was not very well, but the medical team worked really hard on him until he was stabilised enough to take to hospital.”
