RESCUE teams were called after a family lost their two dogs on a Yorkshire Dales mountain yesterday (Sunday) afternoon.
The Cave Rescue Organisation (CRO) was called out at around 6.20pm.
One of the dogs had fallen down a steep slope close to the top of Whernside. The other had chased after it.
While both dogs - an Alsatian and a terrier - could be heard barking, they could not be seen.
Three team members joined one of the adults in looking for the animals, but found nothing.
A CRO spokesman said: "Soon after dark, the dogs found their way back to the rest of the family at the Station Inn, Ribblehead, and the hill party was recalled.
"Would this have happened if the dogs had been on leads?"
