THE history of Warrington’s most famous church has been uncovered in a new book.
Harry Wells has published Warrington Parish Church, featuring never-before-published photos from his personal collection and Warrington Museum and Art Gallery.
It includes the mysterious Alabaster Tomb, which draws attention from visitors for its two hand-holding effigies.
The tomb of Sir John Boteler who died in 1463 and one of his three wives, probably Margaret Gerrard, viewed from the side and from the top showing the couple holding hands.
Some believe St Elphin’s Church in Howley is around 12 centuries old, and Mr Wells tells the tale of its features, secrets and role in the town’s community.
On the book, Mr Wells, from Orford, said: “If you want to discover a lot about the history of Warrington, you should read the book because that was where everyone was buried and baptised until the 19th century.”
