A GREENFINGERED seven-year-old has made her house the talk of Comberbach this summer, growing giant sunflowers more than double her height.

Mia Kent, who is in Year 3 at Comberbach Primary School, couldn’t wait to get back to school to tell all of her friends about the near-10-foot tall sunflowers growing outside the front window.

Since planting them in May, she has watered them daily alongside her efforts with peas, chillies and strawberries.

Her mum, Melissa, says Mia has been interested in gardening for a young age, since she installed a veg patch next to the house a few summers back.

Melissa said: “We do grow veg every year, and she loves it – she’s a little greenfingers.

“We decided to grow some sunflowers but we really didn’t expect this. If we had known this would happen, I might not have planted them in front of the window!”

With the sunflowers – numbering more than a dozen – now starting to die off, Mia has cleverly suggested harvesting the seeds.

Melissa said: “She has done it all herself, going out every night watering them. Mia is super proud of it, and so excited to show all of her friends at school and gymnastics.

“It’s lovely how much wildlife it attracts, whenever you look at it there are bees and butterflies nearby.

“Next year we want to see who can grow the biggest pumpkin.”
