A MAN inspired by his wife’s cancer recovery will raise more than £1,000 for charity by running the BMW Berlin Marathon.

Colin Turner, 46, is making his marathon debut for Cancer Research UK five months after he watched wife Amy, 44, skydive to raise £1,380 for Wirral-based Clatterbridge Cancer Centre.

She won her battle with cervical cancer earlier this year, and it’s encouraged the couple from Great Sankey to increase awareness of the disease she was diagnosed with in May 2018.

Colin said: “If Amy can go through what she has with the strength and determination she has continued to show, then I can run the Berlin Marathon.

Warrington Guardian:

“She threw herself out of a plane, which is something I’d never do because I don’t like heights, but she was delighted that I’d signed up for this marathon and that I’ve got my focus on it. She’s really supportive.”

The run takes place on Sunday September 29, and he’ll be joined at the start line with two colleagues from International Nuclear Services (INS) where he’s a senior shipping manager.

The company, which has a site in Warrington, will add £500 to the amount raised on Colin’s donation page, which currently stands at over £650.

He added: “People have been very generous and I’m very grateful for all the support people have given through the training.

“It’s been an intense 17-week programme, but I’ve managed to sneak out for five-mile runs during lunch. I’ve managed four runs a week, including during work trips.

“I ran around the Imperial Palace in Tokyo, Japan, which was pretty surreal and challenging due to the hot weather, and have been getting up ridiculously early on weekends to make sure I’m ready for what’s ahead.”

Amy, a teacher at Penketh High School, doesn’t have time off to join Colin, but he’s looking forward to enjoying Oktoberfest and a tour of Berlin before returning home.

His colleagues Peter Buchan and Andy Gray are running in aid of Prostate Cancer UK and have already raised £900.
