AN abandoned dog found with an apology note attached to its collar has been assigned a new home exactly one week later.

Poppy, an 11-year-old Shih Tzu crossed with a pug, was handed in to Warrington Animal Welfare on Slutchers Lane, Bank Quay last Wednesday, and a couple passed the checks to take care of her yesterday, Wednesday.

They came forward after a post by the charity’s Facebook page was liked more than 800 times and included a note from the previous owner written from Poppy’s perspective.

Warrington Guardian:

It read: “I am a well-behaved dog and love lots of attention. My owner cannot look after me anymore and is very sorry, but I just didn’t know what to do.

“Will you look after me and find me a new home? Sorry.”

She’s since had blood tests and has been in foster care organised by trustees at Warrington Animal Welfare.

One of those trustees, Jacquie Atherton, said: “She’s lovely, so it’s no surprise she’s been snapped up straight away.

“They’re a loving family and they’ve already got a pug, so she’s got a friend.”

Warrington Guardian:

She’s being treated with antibiotics for ear and tooth infections, but the couple will be able to take her home after her short treatment has ended and final tests have been carried out.

Poppy was also found with cataracts in one eye which is causing her to lose her sight, and her microchip had not been updated.

That meant the charity's volunteers had no information on her history, and this can be a major problem when centres like theirs try to rehome abandoned dogs.

Jacquie said: “It a shame when people feel they can’t approach a rescue centre, because it puts us on the back foot.

“Luckily, she’s only a small breed, but if it was a larger dog we’d need as much information as possible on its history, for safety reasons.”
