HOLMES Chapel Comprehensive School is seeking planning approval to install two canopies at the school.

The canopies would provide students with cover during bad weather as they follow the main circulation routes from the front to the rear of the site.

The front canopy would extend from the main entrance of the school and form a large covered connecting space that brings together the main circulation routes for the school.

A report with the application said: “It will be an important feature and will be architecturally appealing, light and spacious.

“The space will allow students cover during poor weather and outdoor seating space.

“To give a sense of height in the centre we propose a barrel vault design to allow for maximum internal space under the canopy. This height lends itself perfectly to outdoor, covered activities which work with the oversized external steps proposed.

“As the canopy is part of a fire escape route, all materials need to be suitably fire-resistant.

“The rear canopy will provide a covered, outdoor space for students and links to the main circulation space at the rear of the school site. The space will be open sided and allow students a covered area where, for example, they would be able to dine outside.

“During the works, access and escape to and from the school for staff and students will be co-ordinated to ensure the safety of the occupants throughout the duration of the construction period.”

The application has been submitted to Cheshire East Council, with the deadline for comments on the plan, reference 19/2969N, being July 25.
