KNUTSFORD Lions is to extend its winter fuel scheme to offer help to those in financial hardship.

In 2015 the group launched Project Wenceslas, which enables people who receive a Winter Fuel Allowance but feel they don’t need it all themselves, to donate it to help families and individuals in the Knutsford area in need.

“The scheme has been very successful in keeping many people warm during the winter months,” said Peter Willgoose, Knutsford Lions President Elect.

“Sadly, however, some families are missing out on receiving much- needed help, either because they have themselves prioritised keeping warm to the detriment of other essential needs, or there are other issues such as problems associated with the Universal Credit system.

“Currently no help can be given to those families from Project Wenceslas funds since the money is designated for fuel poverty alone, and is therefore not available to help in other cases of financial hardship. Knutsford Lions propose to redress this situation.”

From August 1 money donated to Knutsford Lions - Project Wenceslas, including surplus monies donated before that date, will be used for the benefit of families and individuals in Knutsford and the surrounding areas who are suffering from fuel poverty, fuel debt or significant financial hardship.

Peter added: “Control of payments will continue to be by the local CAB, Great Places Housing Group and other professional organisations operating in this area of community support.

“We hope that all past and future donors to Project Wenceslas will understand why these changes are being made, but if anyone wishes their donation to be used exclusively for fuel poverty and fuel debt we will be happy to honour this.”
