RUDHEATH Fete revived after 20 years has been hailed a huge success.

The fun-filled family event attracted around 2,000 visitors to Rudheath Primary Academy on Saturday.

"It was wonderful," said Olwyn Dean, chairman of Rudheath and Witton Together, who organised the summer celebration.

"The overwhelming response from people was that there was lots to do and see and it was great to have such a brilliant event back in the village. It exceeded all our expectations!"

Hilary Hayes, who was at the fete when she was a young girl, crowned Summer Sneyd as queen, Sophie Rathbone as fairy queen and Katie Wright as rose queen.

The colourful pageant involved lots of children in various roles including maids of honour, flower girls, ladies in waiting, train bearers, and crown bearers.

"It was lovely to bring the generations together," said Olywn. "We had babies in prams through to people in wheelchairs, all enjoying themselves.

"I'm truly proud and humbled by the way people have reacted to our fete. Bringing the fete back is a real source of pride for me as I was involved in organising it 20 years ago when my children were in it and now my grandchildren are taking part."

Dozens of local businesses, groups and charities supported the event, with around 50 stalls.

Fun-filled activities kept children entertained

A seven night Eurocamp holiday, including a ferry crossing, was the star prize in a giant raffle, with gifts donated by local businesses.

A bouncy castle, slide, assault course and bucking bronco provided plenty of fun-filled activities.

Barnton Silver Band entertained visitors with a selection of well known tunes.

The fete was only made possible, thanks to efforts of lots of big-hearted people.

"I'd like to say a huge thank you to all of our amazing volunteers, the children, parents, groups, clubs and businesses," added Olwyn. "Most importantly, I am grateful to the community for all the effort that went into making Rudheath Fete 2019 a real success.

"We hope to make it an annual event and have already set the date for next year - June 6!"
