A GROUP of friends will embark on a 12 hour fundraising bonanza this weekend in a bid to prepare for a 900 mile cycle ride in memory of Paul Lavelle.

On Sunday, May 19 a group of pals from the Paul Lavelle Foundation will visit Total Fitness in Prenton to take part in a 12 hour fundraising day in preparation for their gruelling nine-day challenge from Lands End to John O'Groats beginning on Friday, August 2.

The aim for this huge challenge is to raise £20,000 for the foundation and Claire House Children's Hospice.

By using bikes, running machines and one swimming lane, the team aim to cover 894 miles in just one day at the gym.

Paul, 50, from Rock Ferry was killed by his girlfriend Sarah Lewis after she attacked him with a broken dinner plate in May 2017.

Lewis was sentenced to seven and a half years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter.

Paul's friends decided to honour his memory by setting up The Paul Lavelle Foundation in a bid to raise awareness of domestic abuse against men and help others.

They have now opened a new hub at Royal Standard House in Rock Ferry to offer services for men who are suffering domestic abuse and act as a base for future events from the charity.

Charity trustee Paul Gladwell told the Globe: "The bike ride is going to be a massive event with 37 riders and van drivers doing the trek.

"On day four we hit Wirral and Merseyside and will be stopping at Claire House to meet families before, under police escort, we head through the tunnel and travel to Goodison Park - Paul's second home.

"After his death, a large group of us wanted to honour Paul and set up the charity, while supporting other great charities like Claire House.

"Most of us haven't done much exercise or training for a few years, so cycling 900 miles is a massive challenge for us."
