A CULCHETH journalist has created a comedy night where performers will discuss their experience in the media industry.

Kirsty Styles, 31, organised Standup For Journalism - a first-of-its-kind research programme and money raised will go to the crowdfund for Lyra McKee, the young journalist killed in Derry last week.

The former Priestley College student said: "I'm very keen, as are those who knew Lyra, to ensure people understand why journalism matters.

"Getting public support, by telling the human stories of people working in the media, may be crucial to securing the future of an industry that’s in trouble.

"It’s no secret that journalism has an image problem, demonstrated by the fact that journalists are trusted less than estate agents."

Kirsty worked as a technology journalist in London until she moved back up north - and is now living in Liverpool.

Working now as a researcher at UCLAN, she says the results of this pilot comedy training programme will be translated into insights for the journalism industry.

The comedy night takes places on Wednesday, May 8 at the Kings Arms in Salford. Doors 8pm tickets cost £5 and can be bought via www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/standup-for-journalism-join-the-audience-tickets-59437911393
