BEXTON Primary School could be heading to the House of Commons in May after being shortlisted for a major accolade.

The school is celebrating after its governing board was shortlisted in the National Governance Association (NGA) awards for ‘Outstanding Governance’.

It is one of only seven entrants across the country to be shortlisted in the ‘outstanding governance’ category.

The school’s chairman of governors, Peter Woodhouse, said: “We are really pleased to have been recognised for our contribution to school improvement.

“We have a very skilled and dedicated team of governors who work closely with staff and parents to ensure the school continues to move from strength to strength.”

The board consists of 14 volunteer governors who represent a mix of parents, the local community and teaching staff.

They meet each quarter and oversee the strategic direction of the school along with two sub-committees which oversee the curriculum and resource management.

Judges will now visit the school to interview a number of governors, including headteacher Emily Armstrong, to ask further questions about the work of the governing board.

The awards ceremony will take place at the House of Commons on May 21.

The National Governance Association’s website said: “Governing boards and clerks make a vast and valuable contribution to the education of young people.

“Our biennial awards celebrate the important role of governance volunteers and professionals, the only national honours to recognise some of the quarter of a million people governing in schools in England.

The Outstanding Governance Awards 2019 will recognise achievements in four categories; outstanding governing board in a single school, outstanding governing board in a group of schools, outstanding vision and strategy and outstanding clerk to a governing board.
