A FORMER butchers unit in Orford will be turned into a takeaway.

Applicant Adam Tezgal submitted plans to change Poplars Butchers, which has been closed six months, into a kebab takeaway.

Cllr John Kerr-Brown (LAB – Poplars and Hulme) was present at Wednesday's meeting of the development management committee to object to the plans.

He told councillors there were already too many fast food joints in the Poplars Avenue area.

He said: "This is an area where there is a proliferation of takeaways.

"We are working to promote healthier communities and establish diversity in the ward with different types of shops and food outlets.

"There are serious issues with obesity and illnesses and if we are serious about trying to enhance our inner wards, I am asking for the application to be refused.

"There are at least five other fast food outlets in the vicinity – we need to take control and look to the future."

Mr Kerr-Brown also raised concerns about the smell and noise for tenants living above the unit.

The plans received 11 objections from members of the public who all stated there was 'no need for another takeaway'.

However councillors approved the plans at the Town Hall meeting.

Seven were in favour while three objected and one abstained.
