YOUNG musicians at a Northwich School enjoy mastering new skills and performing.

Pupils at Little Leigh Primary School have now received a box packed full of 150 different percussion instruments.

Northwich Guitar Club donated the gift after raising money from a concert.

The group was set up 18 months ago by music teacher Kris Reid who had been running a beginners’ guitar course at Sir John Deane’s College.

Kris spent 15 years performing professionally in the music industry before becoming a teacher.

Founder club member Ian Smith, 70, said:”We have people of various abilities who are learning the guitar. We split into different groups to help and support each other.

“We come together to perform gigs for friends and family and raise funds towards musical equipment for schools.”

The club is keen to share their passion for music with children.

“These percussion instruments are ideal for little ones,” added Ian.

“It was lovely to see the whole school there when I presented the instruments. I told them all about our club and they asked questions. They were really appreciative.”

Jaki King, music co-ordinator and assistant head teacher at Little Leigh Primary School, said: “We are really grateful for any donations of equipment.

“We will make sure that everyone will benefit from these instruments.”

Pupils are already learning how to play woodwind instruments. Year groups are being introduced to the recorder and clarinet and there is a guitar club.

Some children have piano lessons.

A well established choir performs at various community events including Young Voices and at the Cheshire Show and Chester Cathedral.

“For a small school we do an awful lot,” said Mrs King. “You can see children’s confidence coming through singing in the choir and learning how to play musical instruments.”

New members of any ability are welcome to join to Northwich Guitar Club. Sessions are held at Northwich Cricket Club on Thursdays from 7pm to 9pm.
