POPPY appeal organiser Khumi Burton has thanked the Wilmslow public for their ‘fantastic’ support.

The total raised so far is £34,439, which is about £3,000 more than 2017.

Khumi said: “As County Poppy Appeal organiser for Cheshire East and Poppy Appeal organiser for Wilmslow, my heartfelt thanks go to the customers of the three supermarkets, the residents of Wilmslow and the public who visit Wilmslow.

“The 2018 appeal in Wilmslow has produced a fantastic result. To everyone who supported us – thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

She also thanked the volunteers at the collections at Waitrose, Sainsbury’s and Lidl for the two weeks of the appeal, the contribution of the Wilmslow schools, the town’s Air and Army Cadets and the Remembrance Sunday Service collection at St Bartholomew’s Church.

Khumi added: “I hear also from volunteers how many people

related about their parents, grandparents and great grandparents who were involved in the First World War.

“The volunteers and I were so glad to hear their stories, and how their ancestors sacrificed their lives for the generation after them and for the present generation.”

Collections raised £7,772 at Waitrose, £7,166 at Sainsbury’s, £910 at Lidl in a few days on the second week, £1,812 from Wilmslow schools, £1,207 from the Air cadets, and £2,790 from the Army cadets.

Khumi said: “Due to a lack of volunteers we could not deliver poppy tins and boxes all over Wilmslow – two of us covered as many shops and venues as possible.

“I am always looking for volunteers in Wilmslow or Cheshire East. If you can spare two hours of your time towards the end of October and beginning of November please call me on 07821 288975 or email me at khumiTburton@gmail.com.

“With your help we can cover more premises and venues and man the supermarkets.”
