APPROVAL is being sought to give a former village grocers shop a new lease of life.

Gary Lindsay from Nether Alderley is seeking planning permission to create a new shop front at the former Chelford Greengrocers.

The vacant shop is in Knutsford Road, adjoins AJ Boon butchers and is opposite Chelford Farm Supplies.

Planning approval for the replacement shop front is being sought from Cheshire East Council, and people have until January 31 to comment on the application.

The premises are in a building built in 1907, and were previously occupied by a greengrocers and general grocery shop, with a flat above it, and no change of use is proposed in the application.

The internal floor area will not be changed by the proposals, and no extensions are proposed.

“The design of the new shopfront follows that of the recently-refurbished neighbouring butchers’ shop, so that the two units will form a harmonious pair, while maintaining the individual identity of each business,” said a report accompanying the planning application.

The plans include the addition of a new shop awning above the windows, and the incorporation of a stall riser will replace ‘poorly-blended in’ brick infill which the report said detracted from the appearance of the building.

The site does not lie within a Conservation Area, and is not near any listed buildings.
