CHRISTMAS party-goers are being urged to practice safe sex during the festive season, to help protect themselves from infection.

The East Cheshire NHS Trust, which runs sexual health clinics across the county including in Northwich, Knutsford, Winsford and Wilmslow, is running a campaign to raise awareness.

The campaign aims to remind people that, during festive celebrations, inhibitions can be lowered due to increased alcohol intake, and urges people to remember the dangers of unprotected sex.

Risks include sexually-transmitted infections (STIs) such as chlamydia, gonorrhoea and HIV, and the campaign is also reminding people that unplanned pregnancies can occur.

The Trust’s medical director Dr John Hunter said: “During the festive season there are more opportunities to socialise at Christmas parties and nights out, where people drink more alcohol than they had originally planned.

“Judgement can be impaired after consuming alcohol, and it is easy to forget to take the necessary precautions during sexual activity.

"This increases the risk of contracting sexually-transmitted infections and unwanted pregnancies, which is why we are campaigning for local people to practice safe sex and protect themselves as we head into the New Year.”

The East Cheshire NHS Trust offers a range of free, confidential sexual health services including contraception and STI screenings at their clinics, a list of which is available here.

Dr Hunter added: “We have help at hand for anyone who is concerned about their symptoms. Our sexual health website has lots of information where you can find your nearest clinic.

"Everything is confidential and non-judgemental. Information about practicing safe sex is also available online on the NHS Choices website.”

Free chlamydia testing postal kits can also be ordered from the website.
