THE parents of an eight-year-old child who ran away from home but then wrote a letter to the police apologising have been praised online for their actions.

Cheshire Police posted a picture of the letter sent into them after a young girl had been reported missing.

The post added: "Forgiveness on our part is not required here but if you’re reading this we offer it nonetheless and thank you for your kind words which mean so much to us.

"Have a safe and happy end to the year."

The handwritten note read: "Dear 999 services.

"I am very sorry my mum called you when I ran away.

"I will never do it again and I know my mum and dad were very worried when I did it.

"Although I didn't go far I know my sister was very scared.

"I promise that I will never do anything like this again and I'm sorry that I wasted your time.

"I feel really bad for doing it.

"PS Thank you for keeping everybody safe."
