MIKE Amesbury has told Prime Minister Theresa May to ‘get a grip or step aside’.

The Weaver Vale MP raised the issue of funding cuts at Wednesday's PMQs session, citing the impact they were having on his constituency during an exchange in the Commons.

Mike recently conducted a survey of Weaver Vale schools, which revealed they could stand to lose more than £80k a year due to government cuts.

It revealed that half of schools have experienced rising pupil numbers, with only 5 per cent recording a fall since 2015.

More than 60 per cent of schools have had to make staffing cuts in the same period, while 60 per cent noted a fall or stagnation in Special Educational Needs (SEN) staff since 2015.

Mr Amesbury asked Mrs May: “Over the past three weeks I have surveyed 42 schools in my Weaver Vale constituency.

"More than £3.4 million will be taken from their budgets, and 60 per cent of those schools have cut staff.

"The Prime Minister’s claim that austerity is over is as credible as her Brexit plan. Will she get a grip or step aside?”

Mrs May replied claiming extra money was being put into schools as part of a fairer funding formula.

Speaking outside the chamber, Mike said: “What the Prime Minister and her government claims and the reality on the ground are two starkly different things.

“I visit schools a lot in my constituency and the vast majority are having to make cuts.

“If there’s one thing you can’t do on the cheap it’s education, the government has to stop spinning us this yarn about extra funding and really put their hands in their pockets for the sake of our children’s futures.”
