I WASN’T around in the great movie boom of the 1930s. All the cinemas I went to as a child had been operating long before my time.
The arrival of multiplex cinemas in the 80s was a short-lived novelty but I have never experienced the buzz that exists around the (re) opening of the Rex cinema in Wilmslow.
I doubt the Rex’s original opening generated more interest than there is in its rebirth. Everywhere I go people are talking about it as though it’s the return of Apollo 11.
Clearly a demand exists for a good quality local cinema and there certainly seems to be a huge wave of goodwill surrounding the Rex.
Maybe we have grown tired of faceless multiplex venues with no real connection to the communities they serve?
Whatever the reason the Rex cinema will be as welcome as the First Jedi.
