KNUTSFORD Mayor Cllr Peter Coan described this year’s Remembrance commemorations in the town as ‘a truly memorable day’.

This year’s commemorations marked the centenary of the end of the First World War, and Knutsford turned out in huge numbers on Sunday to pay its respects to its fallen war heroes.

Cllr Coan laid wreaths on behalf of Knutsford Town Council at the Cross Town war memorial, the new Centennial war memorial, the War Memorial Cottage Hospital and the Parachute Regiment Memorial at Tatton Park.

Cllr Coan said: “Remembrance Day this year marking the centenary was one of the most poignant events I have had the honour to attend. The number of people who turned out to pay their respects made it a truly memorable day.

“The crowds lining the streets to watch the parade looked on with pride, and the many organisations taking part in the parade were a credit to themselves and the town.

“What made the parade particularly special was the superb debut of Knutsford’s very own 2056 Squadron Air Training Corps marching band – which was absolutely outstanding. Reg Moore, our parade marshal, kept us all in order for the 21st time.

“His usual wit, combined with military banter, raised many a giggle from the assembled and kept spirits high. I do hope he continues next year. Reg was presented with a certificate of appreciation from the town for his remarkable contribution over many years.”

The standard for the Knutsford and District branch of the Royal British Legion was carried by Malcolm Thomas, vice-chairman of the branch.

“It was a very good parade, and the parade from Drury Lane to St John’s Church seems to get bigger every year,” said branch secretary Linda Thomas.

“The band from the ATC was amazing, particularly considering they have had their instruments for just over seven weeks.”
