MOBBERLEY wood sculptor Andy Burgess has created a tree sculpture as a tribute to war hero Private Alfred Wilkinson.

Pte Wilkinson won the medal for his bravery during the Battle of Selle in Marou in France in October 1918.

During the attack four runners had been killed attempting to deliver a message to the supporting company.

Pte Wilkinson volunteered to relay the message, and succeeded despite being exposed to machine gun and shell fire for 600 yards.

The sculpture was made from a single piece of Cheshire oak, and stands 10 feet high.

It was unveiled in the Wigan area and was commissioned by Taylor Wimpey for one of its new developments.

The sculpture has attracted huge feedback on Andy’s Facebook page, being ‘shared’ more than 60,000 times.

A wooden sculpture of a soldier created by Andy in 2015 stands guard outside Victory Hall in Mobberley.
