‘ASPECTS of The Great War – And After’ is the title of an exhibition running at Knutsford Library until November 19.

The exhibition has been put together by Charlotte Peters Rock, and together with illustrative pictures it contains her original work on some aspects of the war.

“The exhibition includes some of the perhaps lesser-known information on people and how they were forced to cope with such an ‘out of reason’ event,” said Charlotte.

“There are copies of archive cuttings from The Knutsford Guardian, and a song about the times and circumstances when Knutsford men joined up.

“The rest of the songs and poems are my original work, firmly based on the facts, as researched.

“There is information about young men rushing to joining up, very short men fighting to join up, extremely brave nurses on the front line, children conducting funerals of children next to the battlefields, Belgian dog-cart refugees and a German mother’s aspect.

“There is a photograph of the Haron Baronian family memorial in 1922 in the family’s garden of Brae Cottage, Legh Road, as well as one taken earlier this year.

“Both show how that familial statue looked before being removed from its plinth and set high in the air on polished black stone on the library lawn.

“There are also local aspects of how this area of Knutsford and District pulled together to build its war memorial, and the bravery of Great War pilots, two of who decided to cross the Atlantic in the primitive, radar-less aircraft of the day, to prove it could be done.

“There is also a copy of the original fundraising letter sent out by land donor Major Cuthbert Leicester Warren and local movers and shakers from across the parishes to raise funds for a Knutsford and District War Memorial to honour those who were lost, whilst also aiding those returning injured.

“When at Cheshire Archives I also copied an autograph book of a nurse.

“Nurse Yell (or Nell?) spent her time in Knutsford nursing injured soldiers sent back from the bloodiest of battles at the Front. Some of them filled her autograph book with their comments. The copies are also on show.”
