A LATCHFORD scooter club has been featured in a new music video for Soft Cell.

Synth-pop duo, Marc Almond and Dave Ball, have released their first new song in 15 years called Northern Lights.

It pays tribute to their roots in Northern Soul as their biggest hit, Tainted Love, was actually a cover of a 1964 Gloria Jones song and all their early material was heavily influenced by that scene.

The single mentions Manchester's Twisted Wheel so the duo decided to record some of the video there – which was where Phase 3 Scooter Club came in.

Dave Porter, a member of Phase 3 and a regular at The Twisted Wheel, said: "Soft Cell’s new single mentions The Twisted Wheel. It’s about going to the club back in the day as well as looking at how it is now.

"They approached Pete Roberts who runs the club about maybe getting a few old Mods and scooters together. Pete knew I was part of a scooter club so he called and asked if we could get a few lads down."

The video was filmed around a month ago and on the day Dave was joined by his partner Mary Hennessey, Barry and Brenda Ford, Ian Cusack, Chris Clayton, Richie Ford and Dave Eyres as they rode their scooters from Warrington to Manchester.

Phase 3 members Keith Colledge and Maggie Hennessey also met them there.

Dave, who lives in Latchford, added: "We were in and out of the shots. They did some filming around the back streets of where the club is of us walking towards and away from the camera as well as a few shots of people’s faces.

"When I went down into the club Marc Almond was there so I got to meet him, and I also got to meet Dave Ball a short while after that. He said he appreciated us coming.

"I didn’t get the chance to chat to them after that as everyone was stopping to get pictures with them. But they made us all feel relaxed. It was very informal.

One of the lads in our crew, Barry, used to go to the Twisted Wheel back in the 60s so he’s been there all the way through it

It was a really interesting experience and the day just flew by. Everyone who went on the day thoroughly enjoyed it."

Phase 3 Scooter Club was set up around eight years ago and now has about 50 members.

They meet at The Grange in Latchford every Wednesday and attend regular scooter rallies and Northern Soul events.

Dave, 60, who rides a Lambretta 125 series 3, said: "That music takes people back to a nice place. We’re all reliving our youth a little bit. It’s also a really friendly scene. Nothing is too much trouble for anybody."
