NOVEMBER will mark 100 years since the end of The First World War, and a group representing Alderley Edge Parish Council and the churches in the village has come together to commemorate the event.

The group aims to create a tribute to all those in the village who gave their lives in that war, and at the same time raise funds to help veterans of more recent armed conflicts.

A charity called Remembered has commissioned artist Martin Barraud to design installations featuring silhouettes of First World War soldiers.

He has created a number of touching figures under the title: There but not there.

The largest one is a six-feet tall outline of a First World War soldier with his head bowed, and the group would like to buy at least one, which will be placed at selected locations around the village and at the war memorial on Remembrance Day.

The cost of the full-size figures is £625, excluding VAT, and the parish council has agreed to pledge the first £325 as long as individuals, businesses and other organisations donate the remaining £300.

If more is raised than this then additional figures can be bought, and any surplus will be donated to the charity.

Alderley Edge is one of the few places in Cheshire to be featured on an online map as part of the ‘Remembered Network’.

Anyone who would like to make a donation should contact parish clerk Anne Ross by email at clerk@alderleyedge-pc.gov.uk.

Anne can give you details of how you can make a donation online through your bank, or you can send a cheque made out to Alderley Edge Parish Council (marked ‘Tommy Appeal’ on the back) and send it to Anne Ross, Alderley Edge Parish Council, Festival Hall, Talbot Road, Alderley Edge.

If you would like further details about the appeal please contact Geoff Hall on 01625 581321 or by email at geoffhall@alderleyedge-pc.gov.uk or Mandy Parr at mandy@mandyparr.com.
