ROAD works in Alderley Edge are to be extended after a hole was discovered under a footpath.
Cheshire East Council is carrying out road safety improvements on Wilmslow Road/London Road.
The London Road railway bridge is currently closed at all times from the junction of Heyes Lane to Ryleys Lane while the work takes place.
A Cheshire East spokesman said: “The road was due to reopen on August 19. However, during the work, a cavity was discovered under a section of the footpath.
“Investigations are ongoing, with the assistance of relevant utility companies, to determine the cause.
“The road will not reopen until it is safe to do so. Additional resources have been assigned and the highways team’s working hours extended to complete investigations as swiftly as possible.
“Members of the public are advised to plan their journey using the signed diversion routes. Businesses remain open as usual.
“Cheshire East’s highways team will be monitoring the work as it progresses, and any further updates will be tweeted from the @CECHighways Twitter account.
“We thank motorists, businesses and residents for their patience during this necessary work.”
The programme of work is aimed at improving the safety of the area on the south west side of the bridge, and will include new kerbs and pedestrian barriers. In addition, resurfacing work will be undertaken.
