ALLOSTOCK Gooseberry Show secretary Jim Hart swept the board on Saturday, taking the main trophies at the show at The Crown Inn at Lower Peover.
Jim triumphed with his 26 pennyweight Millennium entry to take the premier berry trophy, as well as winning the triplets, twins, all four classes in the colours, the Champion Show Plate and Lord Derby plate.
It was the fifth year in a row that Jim has won the premier berry trophy, and this year’s success came against a backdrop of one of the hottest summers growers can remember.
“All the clubs have been down this year in terms of the weight of their berries,” said Jim.
“The very hot weather we’ve had stopped the berries growing. There has been no let-up in the heat. Gooseberries like sun, but cooler weather.
“I was really pleased to win the premier berry trophy, and this year all 14 members of our club had berries to show.
“We had three new members showing, David and Kathryn Lake and Cybil Crossman, and it was a really good day, with a lot of visitors, more than usual, which boosted the raffle.
“We enjoy the friendly competition of trying to grow the biggest berry, and would like to thank Janet and Simon at the Crown for their support and a great show day meal.”
Janet was presented with a bouquet, and Jim did the weighing of the berries helped by John Hardy (boxing) and the Riley family with the paperwork.
The club’s oldest member is Colin King, 88, and show chairman Terry Price came second in the premier berry class and won the Firbob Twins.
