A STUDENT has lifted the coveted Miss Blackpool 2018 title . . . except she's from Horwich!

It was third time lucky for 20-year-old Lydia Murray, after she lifted the trophy and was crowned in front of a packed audience at the Paradise Room, at Blackpool Pleasure Beach.

Lydia first competed against 24 hopefuls for the title back in 2016.

The beauty pageant finalist entered the competition after getting a flavour for the catwalk in a job she had at the time in a bridal boutique.

The former Rivington and Blackrod pupil’s appearance was after she submitted a photograph in 2016 and was chosen for the final round.

Although she failed to win it then, she entered again last year before eventually taking the title at weekend.

Lydia, who is studying business management at Edge Hill University, said: “I really was not expecting. It’s an amazing feeling. I’ve tried for three years.

“The first time I took part in Miss Blackpool, it really boosted my confidence.

“The best bit about it is making new friends.

“The girls all help each other. I think just getting up there on that stage can be a really big achievement.

“It’s such a fantastic experience and the atmosphere is always amazing.”

Winning the competition means that Lydia will now make public appearances in and around the North West.

She explains: “I haven’t done any other pageants and chose Blackpool because it’s one of the oldest. I love the way it’s still traditional, but it has also moved with the times.

“I’ve got some charity events and appearances coming up and potentially entering other pageants before the end of the year.”

Miss Blackpool organiser Karen Cookson, of Angels Elite Models, said: “It was a magical night with such a fabulous bunch of contestants with our main sponsor Panache of Bolton. We are so proud of Lydia, she will make an amazing Miss Blackpool. Huge thanks to everybody who helped us make the night a big success.”
