CARE home Sunrise of Mobberley hosted Remembrance events to improve understanding of dementia.

As part of the home’s efforts to improve the understanding of dementia across the area and dispel myths surrounding it, it took part in Resources to Remember, a Sunrise-wide national campaign aiming to transform the public’s perception of the condition.

The campaign, which aims to provide guests with specialist advice on the everyday things they can do to help people living with memory loss, ran from November 11 to 17.

As part of this, Sunrise of Mobberley hosted an ‘Old-Fashioned Chocolate Making and Tasting’ event and a ‘Life Story and Family Tree’ afternoon, bringing together the community’s residents and guests from the surrounding area.

At the chocolate-themed event, more than 50 guests were treated to a visit from a member of the local family chocolate business, Simon Dunn Chocolatier, who gave a talk on the history of chocolate, provided samples, and taught guests how to make their own chocolate truffles and gold chocolate Christmas baubles.

Sunrise of Mobberley’s dining team served a traditional high tea, including champagne, smoothies and homemade chocolate cake, while Macclesfield Alzheimer’s Society held advice sessions and handed out goody bags, along with poppy seeds to plant at the home.

Relaxing saxophone music was performed by local artist Saira Clegg.

Following this, the ‘Life Story and Family Tree’ afternoon saw Alan Jones from the Family History Society of Cheshire show guests how to create their own personal family trees, and guiding them through helpful websites.

To commemorate Armistice Day, everyone had the opportunity to write notes of remembrance for those who are no longer with us, and hang it on Sunrise of Mobberley’s memory tree.

Dawn Williams, Director of Community Relations at Sunrise of Mobberley, said: “Our Resources to Remember events were a great way to engage residents and guests in activities that enhanced their understanding of dementia and what can be done to support those with the condition.

“On top of this, everyone had a lot of fun learning about chocolate, listening to great music, and creating their own family trees.

“Hosting these kind of events is a central part of our mission at Sunrise of Mobberley to provide a vibrant, active environment for residents to socialise, further their knowledge, and exercise their creative talents.”
