PLANS to bring a one-way system to Cranford Avenue are on hold as Cheshire East Council’s Highways team look to pre-emptively tackle safety concerns arising from the move.

Proposals would see one-way traffic flow from the junction with Stanley Road in the north to Bexton Road in the south.

With 98 per cent of residents in favour of the move it looks likely to come to fruition, although a handful have pointed out that single-file traffic could lead to higher speeds.

Cllr Tony Dean, one of three CEC ward members for Knutsford, reported back to the town council on Monday and noted that the average speed in Cranford Avenue is currently as low as 12mph.

Cllr Dean said: “It’s on hold because there is a concern by residents – shared by the portfolio holder at CEC – that once you take out the natural traffic calming effect of the double parked cars there could be speeding down the road.

“Speedbumps are now not acceptable as a highways solution, due to the polluting impact of cars slowing down and speeding up.

“It is on hold while people consider the way of doing what is desperately wanted in trying to calm traffic, but without putting lumps in the road.”
