A GAS leak in Holmes Chapel caused road closures near the community centre earlier today, Monday.
Residents reported seeing a cloud of gas escaping from near the site around 10.30am, with a strong smell extending to surrounding roads and buildings.
Police closed Station Road until the early afternoon, advising drivers to stay away from the area as traffic built up.
A spokesman said: "Station Road in Holmes Chapel is currently closed due to a gas leak. Please avoid the area and keep windows & doors closed."
Staff from National Grid were also in attendance the incident.
A post on the community centre's Facebook page, shortly after noon, said: "You can now access the centre if you drive down Manor Lane where Aldi is situated to the roundabout and the police are there to direct you into the community centre.
"We apologise for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience."
The centre had previously been closed to traffic.
