RESIDENTS are being invited to see Lidl’s plans for a new supermarket next week as the firm claims it has outgrown its current Summerfields site.

The retail giant, which has store in Village Way, has agreed a deal to purchase the current Energie Fitness Club site, just 300ft away.

Lidl intends to demolish that building for the proposed new store if it receives planning permission from Cheshire East Council.

Plans for the new store, which were submitted to CEC last Friday, will be unveiled at the current supermarket on Monday, July 3.

Stuart Jardine, regional head of property at Lidl UK, said: “Our current Wilmslow store is extremely popular but is no longer able to meet the needs of our customers.

“A new, more modern store will allow us to stock a wider range of products and improve the shopping experience for our customers.

“The proposed new store is only metres away from the current store, which will result in a smooth transition for our regular customers.”

Lidl’s plans involve building a 1,655sq m store with an in-store bakery, longer tills, customer toilets and ample parking.

Twenty new jobs would be created, in addition to current jobs which would be transferred from the old site.

The current store will remain open until the new store is opened, which is expected to be in early 2019 should the plans be approved.

Energie, which employs 10 full-time staff alongside 10 freelance instructors and personal trainers, will continue to run as normal during the planning process.

Businesses situated within the club could also lose income if Lidl’s plans go ahead, according to Energie.

Meanwhile, neighbouring residents are urging CEC to protect trees surrounding the Energie site, which provide privacy for their homes.
