A GROUP of Mobberley mums are set to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in the memory of two of their children who died.

Samara Collins, Caroline Hoyle, Rachel Abel and Nicola Howarth, who met when their children started Mobberley Primary School, will take on the highest mountain in Africa to raise £20,000 for Caroline’s son Louis who died two years ago from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

The women, who are set to start the 11-day challenge on October 22, have also organised a ‘Lullaby Ball’ at Mere Golf Resort to help generate money and awareness, with the help of celebrity host Andy Crane and former XFM DJ Clint Boon.

Sam said: “There are all sorts of people wanting to give to it. It’s amazing how generous people are being.

“We are doing really well so far, it’s amazing. I think people are really touched, especially if they are parents. SIDS is something that terrifies people.

“Caroline’s is a lovely family, she had a seven month old child, you just don’t expect that to happen. It really resonates with people.”

Sam, Nicola and Rachel rallied around Caroline when Louis died, and the group are joining together to support their friend in commemorating him whilst trying to do ‘something inspirational’ for their other children.

Mother-of-three, Sam, is hoping to use the trip to be closer to her daughter Sadie, who died six years ago aged only eight-months-old.

“I continue to fundraise for children’s charities in memory of her since she passed away and I find doing so helps me manage my grief,” added Sam. “I wrote a book to raise money called Sadie’s Star, which is a book about bereavement for children.

“We just wanted a beautiful way of remembering the children and to do something really positive in their memory.”

Training has already begun for the women, who are all using various methods of fitness to get ready for the adventure.

Sam said she is ‘very scared’ for the trip and is not looking forward to being away from her family for almost two weeks.

“I have an irrational fear of big cats,” she added. “There’s meant to be a lot of leopards in the area. I’m not worried about the climb so much as that. Some are worried about the altitude sickness too.”

The Lullaby Ball will take place on Saturday, April 21 and will include a raffle with many prizes, including a holiday, donated by local businesses.
