BE careful what you wish for is a piece of advice that Betty might have followed as Life Begins Again is performed at Knutsford Little Theatre this month, writes David Muncaster.

The problem is that she is bored. With a son now at university and a husband jet-setting all over the world on business trips she needs a bit of fun in her life and, despite the best efforts of her friend, Dorothy, to fill the void, Betty is looking for the kind of excitement that only comes in the form of an extra-marital affair.

Poor Bill has no idea what he is letting himself in for and Betty might do well to realise that she has bitten off more than she can chew.

Meanwhile, Dorothy’s husband, Frank, is also up to no good having been tempted by the considerable charms of young work colleague, Helen.

It will all end in tears!

Emma Bonfield makes her debut for Knutsford Little Theatre, combining voluptuousness with perfect comic timing which will have the audience, as well as Bill, eating out of the palm of her hand.

Meanwhile Ali Hulford makes a welcome return to the stage as the prim and proper Dorothy, best friend to Betty and a consistent thorn in the latter’s attempts at infidelity. Paul Baston contributes a versatile performance as the jack-the-lad Bill who has his world turned upside down whilst Lucy Oliver is convincing as the enigmatic Helen who will keep the audience guessing with what she really feels about Frank.

Another debutante, Richard Hildred, is memorable as Frank; a larger than life character who is like a kid in a sweetie shop when he is with Helen until reality gives him a firm smack on the behind.

The cast is completed by Duncan Forbes, Emma’s real life husband, who makes the most of a surprising entrance as Betty’s husband Michael.

With a set that encapsulates the early 1980s, appropriate costumes and lighting, and a fabulous soundtrack, 'Life Begins Again' will delight audiences that enjoy a good comedy and will bring back fond memories for anyone who lived through the era of Duran Duran, Adam Ant and Depeche Mode.

The play is on at Knutsford Little Theatre, in Queen Street, from November 9 to 12.

Curtain up 7.30pm.

First night tickets are two for the price of one.
