A MAJOR supermarket chain has announced it will no longer build a new store in Holmes Chapel, citing the plans 'no longer being feasible'.

In March 2014, property firm Bluemantle and Sainsbury's were granted planning permission by Cheshire East Council to build a 45,000sq ft store in the village.

It was set to be located on the former Fisons site on London Road and provide 260 car parking spaces, a re-cycling centre and a petrol filling station.

Bluemantle added that the scheme would create up to 175 new full and part-time jobs.

At the time of the announcement of planning permission, Simon Isherwood, director at Bluemantle, said: "This new foodstore will have a significantly beneficial impact on the local area as it will enable residents to do their weekly food shop in Holmes Chapel, preventing 'leakage' to neighbouring towns.

However, Sainsbury's announced this morning, Wednesday, that the store would no longer be built due to a change in the market.

“Unfortunately, we will no longer be going ahead with our proposed supermarket in Holmes Chapel.

Obviously this is disappointing news, but the market has changed considerably since we first announced our proposals, with more people shopping online and in convenience stores," a spokesperson said.

"Following a review we have concluded that our plans are now no longer feasible. We will be marketing the site as soon as possible.”
