MATT Egan, a Sous Chef at The Mere Golf Resort and Spa, has been crowned the winner of the 'We Love Cheshire' Sous Chef Challenge.

Competing against four other chefs from across Cheshire, Matt was asked to create a locally sourced dish within 40 minutes.

Izzy Grey, 'We Love Cheshire' owner and sponsor of the competition, said that the competition was ‘something special for the unsung heroes of the Kitchen’.

“The standard was simply amazing," she added.

Judged by Masterchef star Gregg Wallace and Harthill Cookery School’s Brian Mellor, his gourmet Chicken Caesar Salad was crowned the winner in front of more than 300 spectators.

Executive Head Chef, Mark Walker, who also performed on the festival’s demo stage, said: “I’m extremely proud of Matt. An exceptionally talented chef with a passion for food and an eye for presentation. “

Matt’s co-finalists included Joe Stock who cooks at Common Hall Social, Adam Williams from Upstairs at the Grill and Steven Reddy from The Olde Lion.
