Trip to Hayfield, December 7

Forty-six ramblers joined the last coach trip of the year to Hayfield in the Peak District.

The B group, led by Steve Thomas alighted first at the entrance to Lyme Park. They passed the Cage, the House and the Lantern and then walked over to Whaley Bridge via the Dipping Stone then across the shoulder of Chinley Churn to return to Hayfield after 11 miles with 1900ft of climbing.

The other groups began their walks in Hayfield. The A group, led by John Whitefield, ascended to Edale Cross before a grand skyline circuit above Hayfield taking in Kinder Downfall, Mill Hill, Burnt Hill, South Matley Moor and Lantern Pike. They walked for 12.5 miles with 2700ft of ascent.

The C group, led by Penny Clarke, took the path to Kinder Reservoir, passing the sign to commemorate the Kinder Mass Trespass of 1932. They crossed Middle Moor to the A624 and then on to Thornsett before returning along the Sett Valley Trail after nine miles with 1300ft of climbing.

Ken McKenzie took his D walkers for a stroll along the Sett Valley trail to New Mills where there was time to look around the shops and cafes. To return to Hayfield they followed roads and field paths, getting back after six and a half miles with 650ft of climbing.

All groups encountered sun, rain, hail, sleet and snow with wind on the tops but everyone wrapped up for it and so cared not a jot.

Back in Hayfield, members enjoyed a Christmas meal at the Lantern Pike.

The coach trip for the return journey was quiet as the contented ramblers ruminated on a great day out in the Peak District followed by a splendid repast. Many thanks to the coach organisers for making it possible.

The next trip for Vale Royal and Knutsford Ramblers will be to Loggerheads, near Mold, on Sunday January 4, 2015. This will be an ideal opportunity for anyone wanted to follow a New Year’s resolution and have a great day out in the process.
