BUSINESSES, residents and visitors are getting ready to step back in time for the Knutsford Promenade 2014.

The event, which proved a huge success last year, will this year take place during the early evening of Saturday July 5.

The route, specially devised by Knutsford Heritage Centre, includes sites of cultural and historical interest to the town, and many will include a short narration and pieces of physical theatre or music to create a ‘promenading’ atmosphere.

Organiser Sarah Flannery said: “Thanks to the support and input from Knutsford Town Council, one element we were all particularly keen to include was two pieces to commemorate the outbreak of First World War, and we are delighted that Tony Davies and Martin Bell will be taking part to honour this.

“We not only want to recreate the ‘promenading’ style of old, but to do so in time-travelling fashion by wearing clothes appropriate to either 150 years ago, 100 years ago or the 1980s to echo three key milestones in the town’s history this year; the 150th anniversary of the Royal May Day, the centenary of the start of war and the Heritage Centre’s silver anniversary.”

King Street will be closed from around 3pm until 7.30pm from the junction with Church Hill to the junction with Minshull Street to accommodate the Promenade.

The event starts at 4.30pm under the Royal George archway and follows a route including Regent Street, part of Princess Street, Church Hill, King Street and the Knutsford Heritage Centre.

The grand finale, featuring the Roberts Bakery Band, will take place around 6.30pm back at the Royal George archway.

VISITORS to this year’s Knutsford Promenade will be able to enjoy alfresco dining as part of the street party atmosphere.

Gusto, on King Street, has already made its plans for the July 5 event and is working with the children of Poppies Day Nursery to help create a First World War theme.

“The different themes, from the eighties to 150 years ago, are great for this event – it gives everybody lots of choice and a chance to be creative,” said Stefanie Meachin, Gusto’s business development manager.

“The Promenade will be great for the town and will showcase the history and heritage Knutsford has to offer.”

Gusto general manager Mirek Bulka said he was delighted to be offering an alfresco dining experience to guests.

“The whole event will be great and we are very happy to get involved in the community spirit of things,” said Mirek.
